Download videos from TED

November 10, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

Scenario : You are a huge fan of TED and would like to download the inspirational videos. But the site allows you to download one video at a time, You want something which can download all the videos at once.

Solution : Here is the Reply to your Problem. I’m sure many of you know what TED is. For those of you who do not know what TED is, go here :  http://www.ted.com/.

TED is a wonderful site which contains riveting talks by remarkable people which is available free to the world. It really consists of Ideas worth Spreading.

Now if you want to download videos from their site, you have to download the videos one by one. There is no option to download all videos at once. If you Google for a TED Downloader, you will hardly find anything…so here is a way to finally download those videos.

I present to you…The TED Downloader.

It’s a tool I have created for my use but thought I would give it to others who would like to use it too. It’s really very simple to use.

1. Select a download Quality you want(remember the higher the quality, the higher the download time).

2. Select a folder to download it to.

3. Press the “Get TED Talks” button and you are off.

Just minimize it and it will continue to run and notify you when done. Simple and sweet!!! Right ?? And it not only downloads the videos but also generates a description file so that you know where the video file came from. In case you want it for future reference. And best of all, did I mention that it was FREE!!!!!!!!!!

Do note that this is just a basic app I have created for now, I plan to add more features to it in the near future. Enhancements include :  ability to add a Proxy, ability to select specific videos to be downloaded, ability to download selected videos and subtitles, ability to export Links, ability to download subtitles

If you have any Feedback(good or bad) or any Functionality you would like to be added in the app, mail me at : obin.shah@gmail.com or use the contact form.

Great idea. Thanks for making if available. Before I push the button – Gizmo’s site says that the low resolution download is (currently) about 7 GB. Do you know the approximate size of the medium and high-resolution ones?
Also, is there an ‘update’ feature? If I download all of the talks today what will happen if I run the app again in a couple of months? Will it update with the new talks or do the whole download all over again?
    Cheers!

      hey james/jim,
no i dont know the size of medium and high resolution. sorry, no way to find that until it is downloaded entirely. Update feature is not available as of yet but you can follow my repository at https://bitbucket.org/obinshah/ted-talks-downloader or subscribe to this blog, you will be notified when i upload a new version.
As of the talks, if you keep the download folder same and the video quality same, then it wont download the whole thing, just update the missing talks(one of the features i like :))
      Regards,
      Obin Shah.

Thanks for your reply, Obin. I think that I’ll try the medium resolution files and let you know about the size.
BTW: by update I meant update the library of talks that had already been downloaded. But you went on to answer that anyway.

It would be more nice that if there’s a support to download these videos via torrents. What about adding a uTorrent plugin to that?
