Tech News : Facebook shutting down march 15

HaHaHaHa…..if you actually blanched on reading this, then you have been spending too much time on Facebook….You need to stop that!!!! (read: Get a life!!!!!)

It’s not clear how it started, but a ridiculous rumor that Facebook is shutting down is spreading fast on social networks.

The “hot”  rumor , as can be seen on Google Trends (No.2 on Trends) and gaining momentum on Twitter — says that on March 15, 2011, Facebook will be closing down. Not a day off, not maintenance off, but shutting down entirely.

The rumor has led to such crazy tweets as, “Facebook will be shutting down on March 2011? I hope not!” to the more crazy and concerned “please don’t jump to twitter & ruin my social networking experience”.

And its not that only twitter users are concerned, Facebook users are also concerned. From Concerned Statuses : “Facebook is shutting down on March 15, 2011 for good D: Is there any way we can stop this!?!?” to starting a group to stop Facebook from shutting down.

If you got carried away by this, then its time that you stop and review the scenario. I mean, Come on Guys…Mark Zuckerberg is Time’s Man of the Year, the movie about him seems likely to be an Oscar winner, and now Goldman Sachs is raising $1.5 billion from its favorite investors on behalf of the social networking company. He’s not going to up and just run!!!!!

And i believe that that announcement on CNN news of the Goldman Sachs investment as the “beginning of the end” for Facebook  might be the reason for the rumor spreading. I mean, that post went viral with more than 5,000 Facebook “likes”.

Whatever the reason for this rumor, it’s safe to say that as a site with more than 500 million users(now 600, i hear) and a $500 millon investment from Goldman Sachs recently, Facebook won’t be shutting down anytime soon.

Now its time for a bit of Irony, Yahoo announced last month that its “Yahoo Video” will be closing down on…..Wait for It……..March 15, 2011, and videos can be seen for the last time on March 14. And i don’t see no one even spreading it even as a rumor. 😀
