Protecting Your USB – 2 : Detecting viruses by means of Audio

This is Part two of the USB Infection Prevention Series…..

Scenario : You own a pendrive and wont it be great if you could just identify easily whether it has been infected or not.

Solution : This is actually a continuation of my previous post. It combines the audio trick in that post with the autorun technique discussed in my preceding post. So without further ado here’s the trick…..

Modify the autorun.inf file as follows :

[autorun]
open = file_name_with_extension
icon = icon_file.ico

here, file_name_with_extension is the file we will create in the next section and icon_file.ico is the icon technique employed in the previous post, though its not compulsory]

However, there is a problem….we cannot start a VB Script from an autorun.inf file, it causes an error so we will use some different methods for it. According to the research i carried out, i found two ways to do it.

1. Using batch files(.bat) :

Create a batch file with the foll contents :

@ECHO off

start .\Autorun.vbs

exit

Autorun.vbs is the vbscript file name.

and in the above autorun.inf file replace file_name_with_extension with the batch file name.

2. Using Exe files : For this method we will have to convert the vbscript to an exe file. You can do so by going to either of the foll online converters : this or this

Here too, replace file_name_with_extension with the exe file name in the autorun.inf file.

Again as in my previous post, place this and the bat/exe in the root of your USB drive, so that, next time you insert an usb, Narrator will auto narrate the audio message for you
